And that is where they stay. Thousands of photos, and not one of them on a wall. We thought that was a waste, and that is where Hangable started.
Why we exist.
Everybody knows the feeling. The night nobody wanted to go home, the holiday you still talk about, the dog who is no longer here. You have dozens of photos of it. They live on your phone, and you scroll past them twice a year.
Meanwhile there is something above the sofa that you bought in a shop. Something thousands of other people also have. It is not ugly. It just does not mean anything.
We thought it could be done differently. Not by printing your photo, because a photo on a wall is still a photo. By having that moment drawn again, as a piece in its own right, printed well enough to look at for years.
Every empty wall is a memory going to waste. We would like to fill as many of them as we can.
Nothing leaves the studio that we would not hang ourselves.
The machine is the brush; the judgement stays human, deciding what to keep, what to throw out, and how a colour should sit on paper. We are a small team working between a studio and a print house, shipping across Europe. If you want to know how something is made, or have an idea the studio has not tried yet, write to us.
Good paper, good ink,
nothing more.
What looks good on your phone does not look that way on paper by itself. A screen gives off light and paper catches it, so colour lands differently. Someone checks every piece for that before it goes to the press.
A thick, matte, lightly textured stock that reads as paint rather than screen. Acid-free, so it will not yellow or go brittle on you.
Deeper blacks and finer detail than a photo lab holds, in colour that stays where it was put, year after year in daylight.
Oak, black or dark walnut from certified forests. It arrives ready to hang, with nothing left to buy or assemble.
Nothing waits in a warehouse and nothing crosses an ocean. A short journey, less to go wrong, and on your wall within a week.
The piece you never want to replace is the sustainable one.
That is where this starts for us, not with a label. Nothing is printed before somebody wants it, and nothing is made to be replaced next season. The rest follows from that.
Closer to home
We keep printing, framing and shipping inside Europe wherever we can. Shorter routes mean less freight, and they let us see the conditions our work is made in instead of taking somebody’s word for it.
Materials that make sense
Wood from certified forests, acid-free paper, pigment ink, and packaging that goes straight in the paper recycling. We leave plastic out where we can. If a supplier cannot tell us where something comes from, we would rather not use it.
One piece, one tree
For every Hangable that leaves the studio, One Tree Planted plants a tree. No percentage to work out and nothing to tick. If anything about that changes, you will read it here.
